A table with a maximum of six players in poker is called a short table. Playing at such a table is fundamentally different from playing at a long table (with a maximum of 10 participants). Positions in 6 max poker are still of paramount importance, however they are distributed a little differently at the short table.
Taking into account the fact that when the number of players decreases, the places first decrease in early positions, then at a 6 max table there are no early positions at all. For many, this way of reducing a position may seem strange – instead of sequentially removing one place from each position, all positions are removed at once. However, there is a rationale for this decision. The fact is that it is very important how many players will bet after you. And therefore, having raised from an average position in poker 6 max, 5 more players will bet after you (including the blinds), just like at a table with 10 max players.
Thus, positions in poker with a maximum of six players are distributed as follows: 2 blinds, 2 middle and 2 late positions. It turns out that one place from the middle position also disappeared. If during the game the places continue to be vacated, then the middle positions will gradually disappear first, and then the late ones. So, in a three-player game, there will be only one late position and two blinds.
The general principle of playing in any position in 6 max poker is to increase the range of hands played compared to a long table. Indeed, if when playing with 9 opponents, you had to pay the blinds only 2 times (one small and one big) for 10 hands, then on a 6 max table the blinds go twice as fast. It follows that if you play too tight tactics, your stack will suffer significantly only from the loss of the blinds.
Here are some tips for playing at 6 max tables. You should never limp into the game, no matter what position you are in. If you consider your hand strong enough to enter the game, be sure to do it with a raise equal to 3-4 big blinds. This action looks confident from the outside, and therefore opponents will consider that you have a fairly strong hand. Therefore, if you are in middle position, the rest of the participants will think about folding.
At 6 max tables there should be a big difference between hand ranges in different positions. So, being on the button, you have to play a lot more hands than if you were playing at a 9 max table. Conversely, when betting first, you should only play the strongest hands. So, playing at a 6 max table should be looser than playing at longer tables. This is justified by too frequent loss of chips in the blinds. In order to shorten it, you must bet more frequently while choosing a wider range of hands, especially from late position.
